The Role of Intermediate Towns in Regional Development - A Case study

This study analyses the performance and impact of various activities undertaken as part of the Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns (IDSMT) Programme in four towns of Tinsukia (Assam), Changanacherry (Kerala), Balasore and Sambalpur (Orissa) and identifies the constraints that have hampered the implementation of the Programme. The results of the study reveals several aspects. Firstly, there exists wide variations in the stages of development of activities taken up as part of the IDSMT Programme. Secondly, the study has brought out the absence of effective involvement of the municipal bodies in planning and implementation of the Programme and thirdly, problems associated with the acquisition of land for various IDSMT activities have also been examined.
