Introduction

In this digital age there is an explosion of information and it has become difficult for researchers and policy makers to keep pace with the volume of information generated. In addition to professional journals and books, newspapers are an important source of information on various aspects of urban affairs. The NIUA library has been compiling newspaper clippings on urban issues in hard copy since 1992 for dissemination to researchers and policy makers. In order to enhance the usefulness of this compilation and to make it more user friendly, the Institute since March 2006 has started publishing it as a searchable CD-ROM.

15 English and Hindi newspapers covering all major Indian metros are scanned and relevant clippings selected daily. The selected clippings are classified according to major areas of interest and keywords and then scanned and processed.

The joint directors of the electronic Urban News project are Umesh Garkoti, Librarian and T.C. Sharma of the computer department. It is their intense hard work, dedication and perseverance over several months that has brought this e-version of Urban News to fruition. Under their direction, the entire library and computer staff has put in a huge amount of effort in sifting through thousands of news clippings and scanning and indexing them. Many other colleagues at the Institute have assisted this project in a number of ways from vetting and verification to layout design. In particular, I would like to acknowledge Gusai Ram, Sushila Kotnala, Jagroop Singh at the library, Sangeeta Vijh, Mahender Singh, Indu Senan and Aradhana Baghel at the computer department, and my academic colleagues Debjani Ghosh, Paramita Dey, Archana Roy, Promila Jain, Satpal Singh, Naveen Mathur, Nilanjana Sur, Kanak Tiwari and Parminder Marwaha.

If you need additional copies or would like to be placed on our regular mailing list, please contact Umesh Garkoti (ugarkoti@niua.org). We look forward to your suggestions and feedback.
