Under the GoI project on NSUP, NIUA is managing preparation of UPRS for 11 cities. A Workshop on the draft UPRS prepared by various research and NGO organizations was organized at NIUA on 24th April 2008 to discuss the findings.

This workshop was inaugurated by Dr. H.S.Anand, Secretary, MoHUPA. Mr. Alkesh Sharma, National Project Coordinator (NSUP) gave a background of the study and the workshop. Prof. Chetan Vaidya welcomed the participants to the workshop. Participants to the workshop included representatives of the State Government, Municipal Corporations, ULBs, research and NGO organizations. The presentations were made on draft UPRS for 11 cities namely Jaipur, Pune, Ahmedabad, Indore, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ludhiana, Ambala and Chandigarh. Mr. Manohar Kant, Commissioner Jaipur Municipal Corporation, Mr. P.K.Jha, Special Secretary (UD), Goa and Mr. Vikas Pratap Singh chaired different technical sessions of the workshop.

Dr. P.K.Mohanty, Joint Secretary MoHUPA suggested that the summary report standardizing the different information of the different cities and the financial implications of the slum up-gradation program should be carried out. Different institutions have prepared an urban profile of selected cities, identified issues and made recommendations in terms of:

(a) basic services to the urban poor;

(b) income generated and livelihood activities; and

(c) improved local governance

The meeting ended with thanks to the chair and participants.
