A Workshop on Regional Planning was jointly organized by National Technical Advisory Group (NTAG) and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) at NIUA on May 9, 2008 under JnNURM.

The Workshop was attended by more than 35 participants including Mr. A.K.Mehta, Joint Secretary, MoUD, GoI, Dr. P.K.Mohanty, Joint Secretary, MoHUPA, GoI, Mr. T.R.Raghunandan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Prof. O.P.Mathur, NIPFP & Member NTAG, Mr. R. V. Rama Rao, Director, IDPS & Member NTAG, Mr. Ramesh Ramanathan, Chairman, NTAG, Ms. Sheela Patel, SPARC & Member NTAG, Prof. K.C. Shivaramakrishnan, Chairman, Centre for Policy Research, Mr. J.B. Kshirsagar, Chief Planner, TCPO and Prof. Chetan Vaidya, Director, NIUA. Participants also included representatives from ADB, WSB, USAID FIRE-D Project, NGOs, State and Local Governments, etc.

The focus of the workshop was on process of combining the local rural and urban plans at district level. Prof.M.P.Mathur, NIUA welcomed the participants, while Mr.Ramanathan provided background of the workshop and made a presentation on Bringing together: CDP and Master Planning JnNURM and DPC/MPC Rural and Urban. Mr. Jacob Easow, Town Planning Department, Kerala delivered presentation on Local and District Planning: An initiative from Kollam District. The presentation highlighted district planning process in Kollam, where the local area plans are combined with spatial planning process. Mr. Kshirsagar, TCPO made a presentation on Interface between Master Plan and City Development Plan outlining the proposed changes in the CDP process. Prof. Shivaramakrishnan chaired a panel discussion on issues relating to legal framework, time required, capacity of local governments, data availability, role of SEZs/new towns, etc.

The workshop ended with vote of thanks to all the participants by Prof. Chetan Vaidya.
