National Workshop on Creating Low Carbon and Sustainable Indian Cities

ICLEI, South Asia organised a two day National Workshop on creating Low Carbon And Sustainable Indian Cities during 15th-16th September 2009 at Rake. The Specific objectives of the workshop were: 

  • To share the progress of Urban Climate Project: Building Clean and Efficient Cities funded under the Asia Pacific Partnership Program by the US Department of State. 
  • To share the phase I results for the City Level Carbon Emissions Reduction Project and to launch the project for satellite cities, Rajkot being one of them. 
  • To inform the various participating city governments about implementable actions to achieve low carbon and sustainable development.

Mr. Emani Kumar, Executive Director, ICLEI welcomed the participants, which was followed by addresses by the dignitaries. The dignitaries included Sandhyaben Vyas, Hon'ble Mayor Rajkot Municipal Corporation; Mr. D.H Brahmbhatt, Commissionar Rajkot Municipal Corporation; Dr. Philip Douglas, First Secretary,BHC-DFID, India; Mr. V. Subramanian, Secretary General, InWEA and others. Ms. Alpana Mitra, Rajkot Municipal Corporation thanked the dignitaries and the participants.

The Workshop was well attended by participants of the local bodies and experts in the related field. The participants presented various case studies and measures that are being taken up in creating a low carbon economy. Experts like Mr. Brahmbhatt, Mr. Nandakumar Jantre, Prof. Srinivas Chary, Mr. V. Subramanian, Mr. Nadeem Furniturewala, Mr. Vatsal Bhatt, Ms. Brinda Ayer, Mr. Ashok Emani and others addressed the audience. NIUA is working on Clean and Efficient Cities with ICLEI. Dr. Basudha Chattopadhyay represented NIUA in the Workshop and addressed the audience.

Participants came forward and discussed the problems and were also found eager to know the measures that can be implemented to assist cities in becoming low carbon and sustainable .
