The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) is carrying out a study on Doing Business in Indian cities with a focus on Construction Licenses and Registration of Property sponsored by the  Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Under the study, NIUA is preparing guidelines for model system of procedures for the two parameters.  Both the subjects are reforms under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Program of the Ministry of Urban Development. 

 

A workshop on the subject was organized at NIUA on August 19.  It was chaired by Shri Ajay Shankar, Secretary, DIPP and participated by about 30 persons representing MoUD, DIPP, World Bank, National Capital Region Planning Board, State Governments, Municipal Corporations, research organizations and other professional organizations.  Prof. Chetan Vaidya welcomed the participants  and Dr. Rajat Kumar, Director, DIPP gave a brief background of the study.  

 

Dr. Debolina Kundu, made a brief presentation on the methodology and findings of the study.  Extensive discussions took place regarding the methodology, need for improving building bye-laws and property registration system in urban India.  The study will provide important inputs to Doing Business Report of the World Bank.
