NIUA Signs Institutional Membership Agreement with UNESCO-Led Indian Heritage Cities Network

 

NIUA and UNESCO-led Indian Heritage Cities Network (IHCN), signed an Institutional Membership Agreement on 28th November 2008 to promote the urban heritage of India.

The meeting was graced by Ms. Minja Yang, Director, UNESCO Representatives to India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives and Sri Lanka, Ms. Nicole Bolomey, Programme Specialist for Culture, UNESCO office in New Delhi and Dr. Anil Kumar Roy, Coordinator, Indian Heritage Cities Network, UNESCO, New Delhi.

Prof. Chetan Vaidya, Director, NIUA welcomed the participants and stated that this event is very important for the institute. NIUA has been working for preparing guidelines for heritage cities under JNNURM. It has also been designated the National Coordinator for PEARL programme under JNNURM, which aims to create a knowledge sharing platform for urban reforms and projects. Under the PEARL programme, there is a Heritage Cities group and it is potential theme for the programme. Prof. Vijay Dhar, will be coordinating this activity on behalf of NIUA.

The following areas of collaboration have been visualized under this institutional partnership:

  • NIUA to provide urban management inputs to IHCN so that heritage cities can become efficient cities;
  • Capacity building of NIUA and PEARL initiatives in this area;
  • IHCN to support PEARL initiatives under this Institutional membership agreement;
  • NIUA to disseminate the knowledge and information of IHCN with 63 JNNURM cities under the PEARL programme; and
  • NIUA to support IHCN by providing research and training/workshop facilities;

UNESCO-IHCN proposal to the Institute to host the IHCN secretariat for the 2-year period from 2009-11 is under active consideration of NIUA.
