Prof. Chetan Vaidya was appointed as the Director of National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in February 2008. He is urban planner from IIT Kharagpur with over 30 years of experience.

He is working very closely the Ministry of Urban Development (MOUD) on various urban issues and assisting various city and state governments in implementation reforms under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). NIUA is the National Coordinator for Peer Experience and Reflective Learning (PEARL) program that networks 65 cities under JNNURM.

NIUA is the knowledge manager for the High Powered Expert Committee for Estimating Investment Requirement for Urban Infrastructure chaired by Dr. Isher Ahluwalia.

Before joining NIUA, Prof. Vaidya has worked on the Financial Institutions Reform and Expansion (FIRE) project of USAID from 1995 - 2008, wherein he played a key role in providing technical support to urban local bodies across India in effective urban management. He advised various cities, in the areas of municipal resource mobilization, market-based financing of urban infrastructure and improving access of poor to urban services.

Prof. Vaidya was Professor of Architecture and Planning at M.S. University of Baroda during 1991-94 and also worked as Assistant General Manager with the National Housing Bank during 1989-91.
