DOOR TO DOOR COLLECTION AND PUBLIC AWARENESS IN MUMBAI (MAHARASHTRA)

Summary
The Clean Bombay Foundation (CBF) is committed to the improvement of environment in Mumbai. Seeing the bad situation in the surroundings due to accumulated garbage, the need was felt to create awareness in the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) as well as amongst the residents. CBF has eight partners who give technical and financial support to the programmes. The programmes undertaken are - clean up and beautification programme; environment education awareness programme; hospital waste and mobile toilets; and mass media environment awareness programme.


Location
Mumbai is located along the Arabian Sea on the western coast of Maharashtra state.


Situation
Mumbai was in a bad situation due to accumulated garbage in the surroundings.


Lead
The Clean Bombay Foundation (CBF).


Strategy
To improve the environment through awareness in MCGM and amongst residents; coordination with MCGM for collection and disposal, improving the working condition of labourers; and beautifying the highway and southern Mumbai.


Process
Projects:
i) Clean up and Beautification Programme: Includes, house to house garbage collection system; elimination of open garbage spots and rectification of rubble, drainage, road and pavement problems; carrying out supervision of garbage trucks; shop and vendor garbage management and toilet facilities for them; installation of dustbins near bus stops;and conducting health camps.
ii) Environment Education Awareness Programme: Includes, audio visuals and talks; questionnaires for student participants; appeal letter to houses for segregation of garbage; nature tours; forming association with rag pickers and keeping dialogue with the BMC staff.
iii) Hospital Waste and Mobile Toilets: A project with USIS of Mumbai under USAID and USAP.
iv) Mass Media Environment Awareness Programme: Hoardings; press ads; articles through cable and AIR.

Lessons
* There can be fruitful cooperation between local governments and NGOs.
* Education and awareness creation is absolutely necessary for acheiving cleanliness and sustaining it.
