• Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns: An Evaluation Study, 1989 Rs. 200; US$15

This is an indepth evaluation study of the implementation of the Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns (IDSMT) scheme in 22 selected sample towns (about 10 per cent of the 235 IDSMT towns) across the country to assess the impact of the scheme. The study provides valuable insights into the achievements and impediments faced by the IDSMT scheme in fulfilling its programme objectives. This would prove to be a valuable aid for urban planners, administrators and students of urban development.

• Impact of World Bank Credit on Urban Institutions and Policies, 1990

During the past decades the World Bank has extended credit for urban sector programmes in India. In most cases the credit is linked with several conditionalities and calls for changes in the functioning of urban institutions and financial mechanisms in cities that have taken advantage of the World Bank credit. This research study explains what is important in World Bank assisted urban development projects and what kind of impact these projects make on urban institutions and concepts in India. It has also attempted an analysis of the sustainability of these development projects.

Conducted under the aegis of the World Bank, it is the first study of its kind in India to undertake a comprehensive exercise of evolving a state urban development strategy. Based on an assessment of various urban sector programmes and policies on land, services environment, institutional and fiscal framework, it suggests an Urban Development Strategy for the state of Gujarat to meet the land, infrastructure and service requirements of a growing urban population.

Particular emphasis has been laid on issues related to urban development financing and capacity building needs of the urban local bodies. Each of the above five reports attempts to formulate a suitable strategy for urban development in the respective states. Each report comprises a state urban profile and a city profile and provides a detailed description of urbanisation trends and patterns, legislative and institutional framework for urban development, status of urban infrastructure, review of municipal finance and estimates of flow of finances for urban development in the state. Critical areas for urban sector reforms as well as areas which require further investment and development have been identified for each state.

• Technical Group of Urban Perspective and Policy (Volume I & II), 1999

A report on urban perspective and policy was prepared by the technical group constituted for the purpose with the Director NIUA as the convenor. The report identifies major issues and suggests remedial measures.

• Impact Assessment of Mega City Scheme, 2000

The study attempts to assess the extent of success achieved in the implementation of various projects undertaken under the Mega City Scheme (MCS) in all the five cities of Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Calcutta. The focus of the study is on documenting the physical and financial achievements compared with the physical and financial targets. The study identifies the problems and constraints in achieving the objectives of the Mega City Scheme and suggests remedial measures.

• State of India’s Urbanisation, 1988

The vastness of the country and the complexity of the urban phenomenon have given rise to a wealth of data and inferences based thereon, which together contribute to the overall picture of India’s urbanisation. One of the most comprehensive bibliographies available on the subject in India, this publication contains 24,923 entries that include titles of books, articles and journals, and dissertations (published and unpublished) relating to urban topics. Interdisciplinary in content, the entries are presented under twelve major themes. These are further categorised into fifty-one sub-themes to facilitate easy reference.

• Urban Child: Issues and Strategies, 1993

This compilation of papers presented at the National Consultation of the Urban Child, is focused on the children of the urban poor. Presenting a qualitative as well as quantitative analysis of the problem, the papers address a wide range of issues including health and nutrition, child development and early child development and early childhood simulation, education, the girl child in the urban setting, adolescents in slums and the growing phenomenon of street children.

• Handbook of Urban Statistics, 1993

This handbook is an attempt to organise the current information base on various facets of urbanisation in India covering its economy and employment, municipal finance, housing, infrastructure, transport, health, poverty, environment and plan outlay. The handbook will serve as an important source book for the government and its agencies at various levels, and for policy makers and researchers.

This second edition of the handbook provides additional and updated information on the various facets of the urbanisation process in India. Besides serving as a valuable source material for information on the urban sector to policy makers, public agencies and researchers, it would be found useful as a monitoring tool to assess the impact of various policies and programmes affecting the urban sector.

• Handbook of Urban Statistics, 2000

The third edition of the Handbook provides updated information compiled from official reports, published papers and other resource material. This edition also incorporates selected data on South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries in order to provide some insights into urban development problems and prospects of the region.

• Women and Urbanisation, 1987
