The study attempts to develop a situational profile of urban poverty. It deals with the concept of poverty, the migratory and employment characteristics of the urban poor, the quality of their life and, their spatial concentration and distribution.

The study analyses the scope and coverage given to urban poverty by the media. It is based on a survey of eight major English language dailies.

Presents the existing approach to alleviation of urban poverty in India and discusses how the Five-Year Plans have looked at urban poverty. It also questions and analyses the principal policy responses as well as the contents of the various poverty alleviation programmes.

The study uses survey data to evolve effective responses to the growing problems of urban poverty. It makes an attempt to find out whether the perceptions of different population groups are really as divergent as is often contended.

This is World Bank consultancy study, conducted for the Government of Kerala. It evaluates the past efforts in improving the slums and outlines the strategy for the upgradation of basic services. It evolves a typology for the improvement and upgradation of slums on the basis of direct and indirect cost recovery strategies in Trivandrum, Cochin and Calicut.

• Basic Services and Urban Poor, 1990

The study attempts to find out the access of the urban poor to basic services such as water supply, sanitation, primary education including pre-school facilities, health and medical facilities based on a sample survey of over 23,000 households in 686 slums all over the country.

This directory contains state-wise information on NGOs working in urban areas such as their names, addresses and activities.

• Women, Urban Poverty and Economic Development, 1990

What women do and what can women do to reduce poverty in the urban areas? These are among the important questions that arise in the context of women, urban poverty and economic development.
